The best places for a big table and even bigger feast in Edinburgh
Because no one wants to be the person calling 10 restaurants trying to book a table for 12.
I’ve always loved the idea of gathering a big group of friends or family around a table for a long, lazy meal, but finding the right spot can be tricky. Too cramped, too loud, too pricey - there’s a lot to consider. But after a particularly great group meal last weekend at The Free Company, I was inspired to round up my go-to spots in Edinburgh for those times when you need somewhere that ticks all the boxes for a gathering.
The Palmerston is one of those places that just works for any occasion. Their side room is great for larger groups, and for parties of ten or more, they offer a reduced à la carte menu for £48 per head. Think classic, seasonal cooking done really well - perfect if you want somewhere that feels a bit elevated but still relaxed. A killer wine list too!
An all-time favourite of mine, The Free Company is perfect for an occasion. Their group dining menu, The Spread, is exactly that - a communal feast made for sharing, showcasing seasonal ingredients from their own farm. I went last weekend with a group of eight, and it was the kind of meal that felt like a proper event. It’s also the ideal excuse to make a day of it with a pre-lunch walk in the Pentlands - last time, we did the Threipmuir Reservoir loop before settling in for a long, lazy lunch. If you’re looking for somewhere special to mark a birthday or celebration, this is it.
For paid subscribers, after the break I’m sharing more of my favourite group dining spots in Edinburgh, from casual taco feasts to Michelin-rated sharing menus. Whether you’re after a spot for a work dinner, a big birthday, or just an excuse to get all your pals together, these are the places that never disappoint.
